“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart”. (Hebrews 4:12)
The Bible is intentionally layered and complex. Its complexity forces us to depend on God for salvation and not our own obedience to it. The many diverse layers it contains force us to constantly study it as it molds and shapes us into people who embody its wisdom, as opposed to just obeying its commands. Yes, the Bible is meant to be obeyed, but yet it is not a rule book. It is this paradox that makes it so beautiful. Perhaps just telling people to “do what it says”, fails to embrace what the Bible was created to do. The Bible is neither simple nor easy to understand…that’s ok…maybe it is not supposed to be. It took 1400 years for the Bible to form; it’s foolish to think that it can be comprehended in just one lifetime. Thankfully, we have eternity to look forward to!
“Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the LORD, and who meditates on his law day and night” (Psalm 1:1-2)
